Writing a Journal
The past 11 months or so of blogging are by far my most consistent attempt at a journal ever. Maybe "regular" is more apt than "consistent." I certainly had a range of entries. In more recent months, since I really got settled in Boston, I've tended towards personal entries and stories, and away from the traditional weblog.
In reality, I've frequently felt that I wrote myself into a corner of sorts. That is, writing about myself most of the time made weblog entries about interesting or amusing things I find on the web -- of which there are still many -- somehow inappropriate. I felt as though it would interrupt the flow of the site or take away from the more introspective writing, so I basically stopped posting links, which I never really intended to do.
I originally thought of splitting the weblog and journal in June, but was too lazy to do it. Now it's done.
I'm hoping that I can maintain a weblog that will be interesting to anyone who is interested in the same things I am -- pop culture, technology, intellectual property law, etc. At the same time, I think this will give me a little more freedom with the journal. Not that there is anything constricting me now, since I can write whatever I want, but I think of the weblog as something to share with others and the journal as something for myself. For the most part, the journal will be like the last few months, but with some shorter entries about whatever is on my mind or some entries of a more personal nature than I've been willing to post in the past.
Who knows how it will all work out? A few months back, when I was first looking at switching over from Blogger to Movable Type (systems for site maintenance and updating), I stumbled onto Openwire. At that point, the owner of the site had just completed the division of his weblog and his journal. In a sense I used his site as a model. Today I looked at his site for the first time in a while only to find that he stopped updating the weblog and closed his journal off from the public. Only time will tell.

Hey, thanks for the compliment. You should know, though that the split was, in my opinion, a wonderful thing for my site. I could have done essentially the same thing using categories (to split out journal vs weblog stuff) but there were no good CMS's with strong categories back then (MT has it right now).
The journal is closed because I had a psycho after me and I stopped updating the weblog because I'm off to Europe for six months...
Neither change had anything to do with the split.

I totally respect privacy. I only mentioned that you closed the journal because I found it ironic. Six months in Europe sounds absolutely fantastic. Hopefully I'll scrape together some money for a hop across the pond before starting school in the fall.
I think the split will work well for me. I considered using categories of the same blog, but I may use categories for the weblog, so I decided to put the journal on its own.
cheers!
