Tempura Imperialism

Japan. Why does it fascinate (some of) us so? Certainly there is more to it than childhood memories of Robotech and Hello Kitty. Techno-lust and sushi do not a cultural phenomenon make.

Foreign Policy examines Japan's role as a rising cultural superpower and questions whether or not Japan will be able to capitalize on it.
+ Japan's Gross National Cool

Additionally:
+ Magic mushrooms banned from June 6. The Japanese government, in an attempt to divert attention from its own problems, deals a severe blow to Tokyo club kids.

+ Drinks all around: Beer helps prevent cancer. Researchers from Okayama University, Kirin Breweries and the National Cancer Center fight back, giving people new reason to celebrate.

+ Cellphone radiation "trapped" in train carriages. Japanese train cars are packing enough microwaves for popcorn.

I *heart* Japan.

I know you do. I was originally planning to go back there this spring, but that seems to have fallen through. Gotta hate when life gets in the way of fun. If I can't visit, at least I can read about it.
