My Corner Patchouli Shop Gives WiFi Free
Gizmodo has this bit on Free Wireless at Panera Bread. They're taking submissions to build a list of other places that offer free wireless, but they really only want national chains, "because while [they] surely hate The Man as much as you do, it doesn't do anyone much good to find out that your corner patchouli shop gives WiFi free with every bong hit."
I don't have national chains to recommend because they all charge. For free WiFi with your coffee in Washington, D.C., hit up my local patchouli ship, SoHo Tea & Coffee at the corner of 22 & P, NW. Tryst in Adams Morgan also has free wifi, but you have to register, and keep their window open and a whole bunch of other useless things, and it still doesn't work very well. SoHo's wireless isn't perfect, but it's a straight up consumer WAP, no password or registration, and it works most of the time, even if the place is crowded. And if it's having trouble, you can usually get an employee to restart it for you. Plus the staff at SoHo is cool and the drinks are decent. Warning: There's a core group of regulars I see studying at SoHo all the time, but as finals near, it will get jammed with students.
The Starbucks in Chinatown, at 7 & H NW, charges for TMobile Wireless, but if you're upstairs at a table on the H Street side, you can pick up a free signal from an office across the street.
My patchouli airport of choice is Long Beach (LGB), where JetBlue sponsors free wireless throughout. I wish they would do that in all of their waiting areas.
